Altadore Real Estate – Homes & Condos For Sale

The Altadore neighbourhood is built on a bluff overlooking the Elbow River in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Legend has it that the name is derived from two French words, “alta” which means “high” and “dore’ which means “of gold.” Conflicting stories have the neighbourhood named after a mansion back in County Wicklow, Ireland.

Construction began in 1945 and over the years the area has developed into a conglomeration of single-family homes, condos and businesses. More than 40 percent of the housing in Altadore is currently apartments and condos, a testimony to the resident’s preference for low maintenance lifestyles. Some of these multi-family buildings are of the high end variety, providing luxury as well as convenience.

In 2010, Altadore made the list of Calgary’s Best Neighbourhoods because it is conveniently located next to River Park, a waterfront recreation area and the Marda Loop, Calgary’s biggest and most vibrant outdoor shopping area.

Schools in the area include the Calgary Public School’s Altadore Elementary and the private Dr. Oakley School. Junior high students attend Mount Royal Junior High and Central Memorial High School is available for older students. The Calgary Catholic School District offers St. James Elementary/Junior High and Bishop Carroll High Schools, just outside the neighbourhood borders.
